Everyday is extraordinary at Regis Amaroo. It's an approach our staff, residents and their families take very seriously - in the most light-hearted way of course.

A sense of easy-going participation underpins all the services we offer at our picturesque Ringwood residence. From daily interactions during meals and activities to the sense of occasion that's part of every special event and outing.

Outings, such as a recent trip to see one of our staff in an amateur theatrical performance: we can't wait for her next play because we've been invited to be the test audience on dress rehearsal night.

Amaroo's high care residents' love letting their hair down, just like our staff, which is why we have so many theme parties. At least one a month and each brings real sparkle to the place.

For International Nurses Day in May, our very multicultural staff cooked and shared dishes from their own culture and wore traditional costumes. For us it was a great break from our uniforms and for our residents, well, they simply had a ball.

Such pageantry helps create new memories for our residents so they don't always need to dwell on old ones. Theme days are also a delightful excuse to decorate the place. Recent dress-up successes include our 'four seasons in one year' and a right royal occasion on the Queen's Birthday this year.

Our own resident queen was decked out in a red velvet gown and a glittering crown. She spent the day knighting people and granting pay rises (with staff waiting patiently in line!) as all our residents tucked into a big English-style tea with delicious pastries and desserts presented on lace tablecloths set with flowers.

It certainly helps having a maintenance officer who moonlights as a DJ on weekends. He brings along his turntable and CD mixers to give us wonderful music - ideal for our 2-up events, our pub night in November, our beach day in January and our mock wedding in February.

The mock wedding was a hoot. Residents chose whichever, or whatever, partner they liked. We even had residents marrying chocolate! The mock reception featured our DJ, plenty of fruit punch and a well-signed guest book.

The local formal hire shop lent us a wedding gown and suit, which we placed on manikins in the lobby, where everybody could see them. Families joined in the experience too by bringing in their resident's wedding photos. Overall, the experience prompted some fabulous reminiscences, and closeness that was thoroughly in keeping with the genuine warmth of Amaroo.
