Regis Canning Lodge is a community within a community - a strong, close-knit gathering of residents, staff, family and friends which embraces the wider world of north Brisbane in an enthusiastic and diverse way.

Local schools come in, put on concerts, talk and undertake activities with residents. We often host their concerts either musicals, plays or vocal performances. At Christmas the children gather here to sing carols and play music. Quite simply, our residents love having the children around.

Another dynamic aspect of Canning Lodge is our pets. We encourage residents to keep pets, and have a chicken farm visit us every year to distribute eggs, which residents nurture and help hatch. These lovely little chicks are either taken in by residents as pets or sold as pets as part of our fundraising program. This initiative gives residents a genuine sense of purpose and is central to strengthening our cohesive community.

One thing we don't encourage is exclusiveness. Friendships are fostered right across our community, regardless of whether residents are located in high or dementia care. For example, our dementia residents are always welcome in the main lounge rooms for community activities and external entertainers.

Speaking of entertainers, our residents enjoy plenty, including a multilingual musician who sings in four or five different languages. Just perfect for our diverse cultural mix of residents.

Other get-togethers include men's breakfasts, ladies morning teas and our highly popular barbecue lunches. We also hold special activities for our dementia residents, including arts and crafts, and a regular happy hour with mocktails and savouries.

We also go out of our way to cater for individual interests and ideas, whatever they may be. One highly active dementia resident even mows the lawn with his hand mower, an energy-burning pursuit that he absolutely adores.

The key to our success is simple. Always remember that Canning Lodge is our residents' home and as staff, we're the visitors.
