Located in Como, only 10 minutes south of the city and right near the river, our spacious and light-filled residence offers a quality of life in keeping with the best of Perth. Como House is true to this setting, inside and out. Our residence opens into a selection of outdoor courtyard areas, each with a tropical theme and enveloped by the lush greenery of our well-tended gardens. Inside, the corridors are wide and bright with colourful pictures. Communal areas are beautifully furnished with comfortable leather lounges. Those in our reception area are well used by impromptu gatherings of residents and their families.

The consistent bubble of conversation and easy laughter, and the bustle of people coming and going throughout the day, help make Como an uplifting place. Then there are the numerous engaging activities and events we organise on a regular basis. All are generous icing on a very tasty cake.

Speaking of cakes, one of our most popular annual events is dedicated to indulging in fabulous food. Every June, we create a fine dining restaurant in our activities room, for our black tie dinner. Residents and their family members dress to impress and enjoy an evening of fine cuisine.

This year's occasion featured a menu of mouth-watering delicacies; prawn cocktail with Marie Rose sauce, chicken wrapped in bacon and served with an orange and mustard seed sauce, and a dessert of strawberry pavlova. After dinner everyone wanted to kick on so one resident invited them back to her room for a sherry - a lovely conclusion to a delightful evening. The event is always such a hit that we're planning to hold it more often.

The pastimes of our residents are diverse. From watching old movies together and enjoying sport on Foxtel in their rooms, to fun pursuits like scrabble and bingo, and creative ones such as our craft group where residents make items to sell in our coffee shop.

This cafe is the hub of our home, a meeting place decked out in soft yellow and green decor and characterised by 1950s Happy Days-style side booths. Everyone loves this spot because it adds such a feeling of warmth to the overall residence. It's always abuzz with people chatting over tea and coffee or sharing fish and chips brought in by relatives.

Of course, our residents don't just sit around. They get into a very busy schedule of activities. Exercise programs are conducted by our physiotherapists who visit for four hours everyday and provide a range of pleasurable therapeutic services, either in groups or one-to-one. These activities vary according to the abilities of residents. Balancing and exercise for low care for example, then balloon and floor games like quoits for high care. We engage our dementia residents with activity tablecloths, sensory activities and reminiscences of all sorts. To help coax out people's memories we try to learn as much about each person's history as possible. That way we can usually find a trigger to start them off. It might be a photo or a song. Old movies are great for this too, particularly musicals.

Como House's social programs are designed to encourage everyone to mix, and live entertainment is always high on our agenda. Once a month we host entertainers, who either perform in concert or in a less formal setting.

Among these entertainers, we welcome a man who sings and plays guitar, a lady who plays the organ and a rollicking bush band. One relative recently organised a group of Italian singers to come in for her mother's birthday. Entertainers are always followed by another much-anticipated event; happy hour, complete with beer, wine and nibbles.

With home such a wonderfully stimulating, nurturing and comfortable place, no wonder our residents love living at Como House.
