Regis Cypress Gardens in Greenmount
isn't so much named for trees as the history of trees, and one in
particular.
We are very proud to have one of
only two heritage-listed American Cypress trees in Australia. It
shares our spacious grounds with two other venerable giants; a
century-old Morton Bay fig tree and a massive Norfolk Island Pine.
They are complemented by a kaleidoscope of blooming roses with
trunks so gnarled they seem as ancient as the trees.
History is integral to the
character of Cypress Gardens. One of our boundaries runs beside a
heritage walking trail which was originally the old railway line
from Midland to Mundaring. We even have our own heritage home,
called Undercliffe. Built in the early 1880s, it was once owned by
Percy Ford Robinson, Mayor of Midland, who also owned Coongan
Station in the outback north-west and named our local street after
his property.
Undercliffe has had many
incarnations since, including a period in the 1940s as a home for
country people in need. It was then used for convalescence of
various kinds over the years before being restored to its earlier
splendour in 1985.
Our heritage home is one of a
number of buildings on site, each with its own interesting
presence, so Cypress Gardens certainly isn't short on atmosphere.
Of course, most of the personality of the place comes from the
wonderful people in it - our fascinating residents and their
dedicated staff, both of whom share a close bond after many years
together.
Low care residents are always
abuzz, an active part of the decision making at Cypress Gardens on
committees and groups which allow them as much input as they like.
High care residents also like being part of the action, so we
provide numerous activities programs to keep them on the go.
Activities are complemented by an
equally busy calendar of events. Everything from regular bus
outings to local landmarks like Kings Park for picnics and a nearby
tulip garden to monthly concerts by visiting bands and singing
ensembles.
One staff member plays the piano
for our regular Saturday sing-along in our high care area. We also
have organs in the low care and dementia care areas so everyone
gets plenty of musical joie de vive. Our special event days add
even more joy. Like barbecues, which residents help prepare, and
industrious gardening bees with the local Bunnings kindly donating
our pots.
Such abundant choice helps maximise
everyone's quality of life and reassure individuals that they are
an important part of the Cypress Gardens community. The upshot of
it all is that everyone gets to be involved in something that
tickles their fancy.
