Regis Forrest Gardens in Bunbury
couldn't be better named, because we don't just have one garden, we
have four. Each is distinctly themed to add colour and interest to
residents' outdoor experiences.
Most recently planted is our dry
river bed garden. Surrounded by bush, it features sculptures of
native animals including kangaroos hidden beneath grass trees and
kookaburras perched on branches above. There is a sensory garden, a
native garden, an area with raised beds for growing vegetables.
Another is a rainforest complete with lush vegetation and a pond
full of fish. Many residents also tend their own gardens, like one
lady who has a beautifully-blooming rose garden.
And that's just our own 'backyard'.
Forrest Gardens' residents get out and about a lot too. From walks
to the local shops several times a week to our twice-weekly bus
trips further afield. One of these is usually a mystery tour.
Always popular, past mystery tours
have included excursions to regional reservoirs, the local museum,
nearby bird sanctuary, and picturesque Busselton. We've even
enjoyed a morning tea cruise down the Collie River with a local
tourism operator who conducts dolphin tours. This was a special
event and worth all the planning involved just to see the pleasure
it induced.
There are lots of little treats
which take place at home as well. Like regular movie screenings on
our big screen TV and monthly takeaway dinners, which alternate
between Chinese, fish and chips, hamburgers and chicken and
chips.
Speaking of meal options, we offer
two lunch choices everyday, such as roast lamb or roast chicken
(because not everyone wants red meat), plus cooked breakfasts twice
a week in winter.
Choice is certainly a big part of
life at Forrest Gardens. Residents can choose between two different
activities every Monday and two different entertainment options in
the afternoon. In other words, if you don't want to watch belly
dancing then, rest assured, there's always something else!
Every month we hold a special
event. This year we had brunch in June, Christmas in July, a giant
smorgasbord in August and not long before all these, a black tie
dinner which residents and their families adored. For this, we
decorated our function room like a fine dining restaurant, complete
with white tablecloths, candles, menus and a seating plan.
Equally special are our weekend
displays, like the recent wedding dress display which featured in
the local paper. Others include Australia Day, ANZAC Day and flower
arranging sessions. In each case, residents and their families get
to vote on the best display. Last Australia Day we created a beach
scene by dressing an inflatable manikin in bathers and putting it
in a paddling pool. Patriotism aside, it got a plenty of
laughs.
Many of our residents love
participating in the annual Aged Care Games, trying their hand at
sports like modified hockey, modified basketball and beanbag
tossing. Everyone gets a medal for competing and we are proud to
wear our uniforms. Actually, they're green t-shirts and green hats,
but very appropriate to our name!
