Elvis is alive and well, at least in the boisterous spirit of the residents at Regis Shelton Manor in Frankston.

Everyone looks forward to the visits from our wonderful Elvis impersonator who puts on a big show for us several times a year. He has many residents up and dancing, and all the others in stitches of laughter. It never ends with the event either; we talk about his songs and dances for days afterwards. Such social dynamics help make Shelton Manor a wonderfully inclusive and homely place.

Staff appreciate the atmosphere too. Not long ago one member of our team received recognition for 29 years service. Our staff stay because, like our residents, they love being part of one big family.

Shelton Manor has recently been transformed into an entirely contemporary premises. Only four years old, we offer our low and high care residents everything they could want from life. From the chance to relax in tranquil gardens to easy visits to nearby shops and the endless beauty of the beach only five minutes away.

But from our residents' perspective, life here isn't all about them. Many volunteer their services as well, like one gentleman resident who helps weed our garden. A lifelong gardener, he has a selection of his own tools and can be seen digging away in any weather. He's a comic too, and his offers to scratch staff members' backs with his rake always gets a laugh!

Two ladies in low care regularly help as volunteers by setting the tables before meals. They're extremely helpful and staff love their invaluable assistance. Another resident lady makes care boxes for donation to children in developing countries. She knits dolls, puts in pencils, colouring books and clothing then arranges for them to be sent to more than 70 countries around the world.

This wonderful charity work is something she began before moving into Shelton, and has kept going ever since with equal dedication and enthusiasm. To assist her we hold regular little raffles to raise money for her purchases. These are in addition to larger raffles we conduct for community acquisitions.

We're kept busy with an array of events, including twice-weekly concerts and theatre productions by volunteer groups from the wider community. Our residents also enjoy no less than three happy hours a week, with each an absolute social sensation.

Because so many of our activities are oriented towards our lady residents (including arts and crafts) we're sure to place equal emphasis on our men's group. Volunteers join our lads to play pool, watch movies and take them on visits to the local RSL.

Out and about activities are equally engaging for our residents. From trips to see the recent sand sculpture displays on the beach to mystery bus tours around the city. The latter are perfectly suited to residents of all abilities because they can enjoy the sights while staying safe and warm inside.

In our�dementia-specific area, 'crafty' residents create things they can proudly display on the walls. Cooking is popular too and it's remarkable the number of residents who recall their culinary skills as though they home-cooked only yesterday!
