Regis Park Lodge - Nedlands 118-120 Monash Avenue Bobby socks, pleated skirts and slicked-back hair aren't what you'd expect from aged care residents, but that's exactly what the enthusiastic community of Regis Park Lodge in Nedlands will be sporting at their forthcoming '50s rock and roll ball. This special annual event comes hot on the heels of our super-successful inaugural masquerade ball - an elegant affair that had residents, their guests and staff reliving the experience for weeks afterwards. At Park Lodge, we're never short of bright ideas that will inject extra fun into life. This month we're celebrating the 40th anniversary of the moon landing with a moon party. Residents have been busy making all sorts of outer-space decorations, including little rockets put together by our craft group. Staff are coming dressed as astronauts and the main food will be cheese, of course. Only 6km from the centre of Perth, Park Lodge is a world away in character. We're located in the heart of a leafy Nedlands, close to public transport and the beautiful Kings Park. We openly welcome visitors and entertainers alike to Park Lodge. Like the recent belly dancer who was hilarious because she got everyone up and wiggling. Or our piano player who visits weekly for a good old fashioned sing-along - It's a Long Way to Tipperary is always a favourite and everyone knows all the words. A much-anticipated visitor is Seeanna, a gorgeous golden retriever who comes once a week with her owner, Mike. She adores the attention of our doting residents and even does tricks for them. Another highlight is when the children from the local kindergarten pop in. Residents really respond to the delightful innocence of these friendly three and four year-olds. We also encourage our quieter residents to be a part of the goings-on within our community as much as possible. For example, we always move our less mobile people into the activity room so they can be a part of activities. The results are fantastic, within a short time they've gone from quiet and solitary to laughing, watching and interacting. Balloon tossing is a simple but rewarding way for them to feel like they're truly involved. Our residents go out for regular scenic drives, sometimes to the ocean, the river or Kings Park. Once we've arrived we fling open the bus doors and settle down for a cup of tea. Wherever we go it's a special, sensory experience. Back at home, residents have exercise classes twice a week followed by a quiz. This close combination of physical and mental exercise can help stall dementia. We certainly find it sparks everyone up and stimulates their appetites. Park Lodge also has an unmissable Friday afternoon celebration. Happy hour starts immediately after the sing-along in our large activity room. We put Andre Rieu on the DVD, out come the drinks in proper plastic wine glasses and we play waitresses for a host of smiling, satisfied residents.
