How did you start your nursing career?

I completed my nursing degree in the Philippines in 2002 and started working as a Registered Nurse in one of our government hospitals. Following this, I migrated to New Zealand and eventually started working for a large aged care provider in Auckland.

Year 2006, I migrated to New Zealand and completed my Bridging course.

Describe your role in one sentence?

A very challenging but rewarding role.

What attracted you to work as a nurse in aged care?

I was attracted to working as a nurse in aged care because of the continuity of care and long-term healthcare support that is provided to the residents. There is an opportunity to make a real difference in someone’s life and that’s so important to me.

What motivates you to wake up and go to work?

My family is my number one priority; having them by my side motivates me to work hard and do well within my role because my children look up to me and I want to inspire them to do well at school. My son now wants to work as a nurse when he grows up, which is very humbling.

Furthermore, my passion working as a nurse also motivates me on a daily basis. I love being a nurse and being part of a team that inspires me every day.

What do you like about working at Regis?

The amount of support you get every day from the top down to my colleagues has helped me to be the best person that I can. Regis Whitfield has been the best place I have ever worked!

How do our residents benefit from your role?

As a Clinical Care Manager, I advocate for the resident’s wellbeing, provide them support and ensure that they receive high-quality clinical care.

What do you like about being a nurse?

Being a nurse means being compassionate. I have an incredible opportunity to empower my residents and their families with knowledge and support.

What advice do you have for people considering a career as an aged care nurse?

One of the BEST things about being an aged care nurse is the privilege of being with residents in some of their most vulnerable moments.

How has your role adapted since the COVID-19 pandemic?

I realised a lot of things during the pandemic; the importance of family being together, constant communication and staying strong even if you aren’t feeling the best. The COVID-19 pandemic had a huge impact on my life because I lost my father in October 2020 and I could not be home with him to support my mum. He died without my brother and I by his side, so I empathised with my residents and their families when we were in lockdown and the borders were closed. It was a very difficult time, but because of the support system I received from my colleagues, my family and friends, it made it a lot easier for me to cope.

Do you have any daily rituals you live by to maintain your mental and physical health?

For me, prayer is a very powerful weapon especially when I feel down. I also spend time with my family and friends and once a fortnight get together and do karaoke. We love music; from my husband to my kids – they love to sing. Music helps me feel good, improves my mood and reduces stress.

What does ‘Home’ mean to you?

Home to me – is safety and comfort.

A home is a place where there is a foundation of love, warmth and happy memories. For me, home is wherever my family is.
