To coincide with Australia Day, Regis Hornsby held a Welcome to Country ceremony. Residents and their families gathered to meet Uncle Laurie, a local Guringai man and descendant of Bungaree, leader of the Guringai tribe at the time of European arrival.

Uncle Laurie told Dreamtime stories, spoke about Bungaree’s travels with Matthew Flinders, and shared his knowledge of the traditional Aboriginal items that he makes including clapping sticks and boomerangs.

The Guringai people have been custodians of their country for over 40,000 years, and everyone present was honoured by the smoking ceremony performed by Uncle Laurie.
