Our aged care facility Regis Whitfield in Cairns, Queensland has marked the 100th birthday of a remarkable woman Mary Callaghan.
Mary is a Cairns local and has been a resident at the Regis aged care facility Whitfield since 2006. Mary has led a very full life, born in Ingham and educated in Mossman. Her athletic ability and commitment contributed to her achievement as a Champion Queensland Sprinter.
During her life she worked in child minding and was a telephonist before becoming a nurse at Tully Hospital. Mary has a large family with four children, 16 grandchildren and 26 great grand children.
Regis Whitfield hosted a lunch in Mary’s honour with family members and Regis residents in attendance. Mary was thrilled to be interviewed by Channel 7 news as well as receive a special birthday greeting from Queen Elizabeth II.
