Residents get creative with self expression, exploring new image-making abilities

Residents at aged care facility Regis North Fremantle embrace self expression with a new arts lifestyle program designed to explore emotions through artistic expression. The new program embraces a different theme each month. The latest theme saw “love” take centre stage with residents from all care types attending the monthly program.

This particular art therapy session utilised a variety of mediums to create patterns on clay garlands. Mediums included pine cones, shells, and leaves to imprint on clay which was then shaped and taken to dry.

Lifestyle Coordinator Leanne says, “The program received a fantastic reception with residents staying for the whole 2 hour activity. They were absolutely engaged – focused on creating and composing their work of art. One resident who is partially blind attended and she loved the experience.”

Regis aged care home has focused on art therapy as a medium to promote communication and empower residents as they cultivate their passion and explore their own creativity.

As such, the aged care home was delighted to recently welcome a well known artist, Australian born landscape artist Lindsay Pow who for a limited time has provided a short series of art classes to residents.

The popular art classes often have up to 20 residents in attendance. During the class Lindsay demonstrates how to compose a landscape while answering questions on composition, lighting and other techniques.

He’ll bring a blank canvas to the session and apply dabs of paint with a master’s stroke blending with brush, knife and other mediums.

This talented artist is due for another visit where residents will be given the chance to put what they’ve learnt into practice. As always art therapy focuses on creativity, encouraging expression of self and the enriching our residents’ quality of life.

Regis’ state-of-the-art aged care facility in North Fremantle celebrates its 1st year anniversary since its extension, restoration of the heritage building and opening in 2016.
