Regis Aged Care lifestyle staff use virtual reality technology to better understand the needs of aged care residents.
Regis’ lifestyle staff in Victoria participated in an innovative interactive workshop with the focus on understanding the needs of persons with dementia. The education session featured new VR technology EDIE (Educational Dementia Immersive Experience) an initiative by Alzheimer’s Australia.
EDIE is a VR smartphone app which enables participants to see the world through the eyes of a person living with dementia. It’s designed to enhance participants’ knowledge while giving them the opportunity to explore and understand the challenges faced by people living with this difficult illness.
Following the VR session staff identified what areas they could improve in to enhance quality of life for those in care. Regis’ National Lifestyle Manager commented that many staff expressed the positive impact the workshop had on their approach and understanding of those receiving dementia care.
Regis is excited to extend this training to lifestyle staff in NSW, QLD and WA in 2017.
