For Regis Ferny Grove resident Sue, veganism is more than a trend. It’s living her values day in and day out. After her son visited an abattoir and left horrified, he vowed to eat vegan from there on out. Sue soon followed suit.

When it came time to packing for the move to Aged Care, Sue was adamant to not leave her values behind.

“One of the reasons I came to Regis was because I was promised I would be catered for. And I have not been disappointed; it has been wonderful. The activity programs they put on have been very considerate of my lifestyle. All celebrations that have food and the bus trips, they always cater for me.”

Sue feels especially supported at the women’s lunches and on days out, when she knows delicious plant-based food will be on offer. All vegans know the struggles of being an afterthought. Sue, however, is delighted with her vegan options, fresh food made with genuine care by Regis’ skilled chefs.

Regis Ferny Groves chef, Saurav, says cooking vegan is not just about swapping out meat and dairy options. “It is not always as simple as buying a vegan alternative. I get the most satisfaction when the meal is one I can adapt to make vegan for everyone. For example, when a chickpea curry comes up I know Sue will be catered for in a subtle way, as everyone is eating from the same options.”

Saurav finds purpose in making delicious meals for every resident. “I am glad for the opportunity and enjoy the challenge. It is my job to provide meals that are satisfying and it is rewarding when that is successful.”

Sue says it makes a real difference to her sense of wellbeing in Aged Care, knowing that there will always be delicious vegan options.

“Being able to attend food and lunch activities, I know I am well catered for. The food is always of a high standard. I always clears my plate and I get to meet a lot of other residents.”

Sue practices what she preaches and encourages other residents to do the same. From dressing how she wants in loud, bright prints to happily explaining her dietary choices to those who ask. Sue says that while most residents understand vegetarianism, meeting a vegan is new.  She tells those considering veganism that it’s “a healthier lifestyle, you don’t eat as much junk food!”

Whilst Sue initially had hesitations about integrating her lifestyle into Aged Care, thanks to the personalised care she receives, her plant-based diet has flourished. It not only allows her to live her values but also inspires curiosity and connection among fellow residents.
