Social connection and getting out in nature have long been a big part of life at Regis Chelmer. The Home’s picturesque garden spaces, however, have recently had an upgrade.

Last year, resident Betty made a passing comment about her love of fresh herbs. The smell, visual appeal and versatility in cooking meant they had been an important part of Betty’s life before moving into aged care, often tending to her own herb garden.

After hearing about this passion of Betty’s, the team at Regis Chelmer decided to create planter boxes for residents to plant, water and grow herbs.

Regis Chalmer’s dedicated Maintenance Officer Sam planned, constructed and installed the boxes, collaborating with residents throughout the process. Once the boxes were in place, Sam worked with residents to sew and plant fresh lettuce, herbs and other greens.

They all worked merrily away, swapping tips and reminiscing time spent in the garden.

For Sam, the opportunity gave them a chance to connect and spend time with residents. They shared that using their skills to improve residents’ quality of life gives them a lot of pride. They said, “it was a really fun experience building the planter boxes and then planting the herbs together. Everyone enjoyed coming together, having a chat and getting their hands dirty, those moments of connection with residents are what I really value.”

Betty was overjoyed to see the new garden, and said, “it is absolutely spectacular to see the herb garden growing.”

Nestled in a central communal space, the herb garden naturally draws people who delight in its fragrances and bond while tending to it together. The space has quickly become an important part of Regis Chelmer, valued by residents, families and employees alike.
