Moving into residential aged care is a significant life decision, and it’s normal to feel uncertain about where to begin. At Regis, we’re here to guide you through the process and answer your questions every step of the way.
When is the right time to move into aged care?
There is no single “right” time to move into residential aged care. For many people and families, the decision can bring mixed emotions, including uncertainty, guilt or concern about losing independence. Aged care is not about giving up your independence. It’s about ensuring you have the support, care and opportunities to continue living safely, comfortably and with confidence.
You may want to start exploring aged care if:
- Daily tasks such as cooking, cleaning or personal care are becoming more difficult.
- Health needs are becoming more complex.
- There have been falls, near misses or concerns about safety at home.
- Family members or carers are finding it increasingly difficult to provide the support you need.
- You are feeling isolated or would benefit from greater social connection and companionship.
- Managing appointments, medications or day-to-day responsibilities is becoming overwhelming.
Exploring your options does not mean you need to move immediately. Learning about aged care ahead of time can help you make informed decisions at your own pace, rather than waiting until a crisis or sudden change in circumstances.
For many residents, moving into aged care can provide:
- Access to 24-hour care and support
- Greater peace of mind for residents and families
- Opportunities for social connection and meaningful activities
- Relief from the challenges of managing a home
- Support to maintain health, wellbeing and quality of life
The decision is deeply personal, and there is no pressure to rush. Taking the time to learn about your options, visit homes and talk openly with family members can help you feel more confident about the path that’s right for you.
How do I get started?
There are four key steps to moving into residential aged care:
Step 1: Aged Care Assessment
To access government-funded residential aged care, you’ll need an assessment through My Aged Care. The free assessment helps determine the level of care and support that’s right for you. It only needs to be completed once, unless your circumstances change significantly.
How do I arrange an assessment?
You can:
- Apply online at myagedcare.gov.au
- Call My Aged Care on 1800 200 422
- Speak with your doctor
What happens during the assessment?
An assessor will contact you to arrange a visit, usually at your home. During the assessment, they’ll talk with you about:
- Your health and wellbeing
- Daily activities and routines
- Any support you currently receive
- The care and assistance you may need
You are welcome to have a family member, friend, carer or advocate with you during the assessment.
After your assessment, you’ll receive:
- An approval letter confirming your eligibility, also known as a Notice of Decision.
- A support plan outlining recommended care options, including referral codes.
Step 2: The Costs
Aged care fees can seem complex, but we’re here to help make them easier to understand.
The fees you pay will depend on your financial situation, the room you choose and the services you receive. You may be asked to contribute towards:
- Daily living costs
- Accommodation costs
- Means-tested care fees (if applicable)
If you receive the Age Pension or have limited financial means, you may be eligible for government assistance with some or all of your fees. This is determined through an income and assets assessment with Services Australia.
Our team can help you understand the fees that may apply to you and answer any questions along the way.
Step 3: Finding the right home
Choosing a residential aged care home is a personal decision, and what feels right will be different for everyone.
When comparing homes, consider:
- Location and proximity to family and friends
- Room types and accommodation options
- Clinical care and support services
- Lifestyle and social activities
- Dining and meal options
- Additional services and amenities
We encourage you and your family to visit our homes, meet our team, see the facilities and experience what daily life is like. A tour is also a great opportunity to ask questions and discuss your personal preferences and care needs.
Step 4: Apply to a home and Move In
Once you’ve chosen a Regis home, our team will guide you through the application and admission process.
What do I need to do?
You’ll need to:
- Complete a Regis enquiry and application form
- Provide supporting documentation, including your aged care approval and referral codes
- Review and sign your Resident Agreement
Our experienced team can assist you throughout this process and explain any documents you’re unsure about.
It’s important that you understand your rights, responsibilities and fees before making your final decision. You may wish to seek independent financial or legal advice.
What can I expect on moving day?
Moving into a new home can feel overwhelming, but you won’t be doing it alone.
From the moment you arrive, our team will help you settle in, get to know your preferences and ensure you feel welcomed and supported. We take the time to understand what matters most to you so we can provide personalised care, meaningful connections and opportunities to continue doing the things you enjoy.
