At Regis Camp Hill, food is more than just a daily necessity, it’s a meaningful part of life. To give residents and families a closer look at how meals are created, the kitchen team recently began offering guided tours led by Chef Eddy and Chef Yen.
These behind-the-scenes tours offer a valuable insight into the planning and preparation that goes into serving meals for 139 residents each day. Visitors see how fresh produce is ordered, how menus are designed to meet a wide range of dietary needs and how specialised equipment helps the team work efficiently and safely.
The response has been overwhelmingly positive. Josie, one of the residents who joined a tour, shared that it was “incredible to see and understand the processes,” especially the way soups are made from scratch. Soup is often a hot topic in food focus meetings, with residents sharing preferences for texture and flavour. Seeing the large Brat Pan in action was a highlight for many.
Chef Eddy explained that the tours were inspired by a desire to show the care and effort that goes into every plate. “Food is such an important part of life here, and the kitchen really is the heart of our Home,” he said. “By opening our doors, people can see the processes, the teamwork and the fresh ingredients we use.”
Catering for 139 residents comes with its challenges, especially when it comes to meeting diverse dietary needs and preferences. The team manages this through careful planning, a strong ordering system and a commitment to listening to feedback.
Seasonal and culturally significant dishes also play a role in the menu. From hearty winter soups to fresh summer desserts, the kitchen team enjoys creating meals that bring comfort and spark conversation. Chef Eddy’s personal favourites include old-fashioned classics like corned beef with mash and grilled salmon, both popular choices among residents.
Due to high demand, kitchen tours are now fully booked for the next few months. It’s a testament to the interest and appreciation residents and families have for the work that goes on behind the scenes.
