Residents from 15 Regis homes across Brisbane recently came together to celebrate Cultural Pareo Day, a vibrant event honouring the traditional pareo (also known as the lava-lava or sarong) and the richness of Polynesian culture.
The day was a joyful celebration of colour, rhythm and community spirit as residents enjoyed lively performances by Polynesian dancers and drummers, followed by a feast of traditional Polynesian cuisine.
A highlight of the day was a performance by the residents of Regis Greenbank who played a selection of New Zealand songs. The performance was a team effort with contributions from across the Home with the group being led by one of their residents, Harry, and supported by the Home’s chef. A catering team member sewed the group’s performance garments while fellow resident John took on the role of event photographer.
Residents also collaborated o n a ‘Community Tree’, an art project filled with handwritten messages from residents about unity, joy and dreams for the future. The result was a colourful display of connection and purpose.
Interhome events like Cultural Pareo Day highlights the value of celebrating diversity in aged care and the incredible outcomes when residents are empowered to share their stories, culture, and creativity. Experiences like these create a sense of purpose and strengthen community bonds across homes.
