For Regis Home Care client, Desmond, the support he receives from his dedicated Home Support Worker Julie has transformed his everyday life.
Desmond lives with cerebral palsy, which affects his energy levels and ability to walk. He says Home Care services enable him to do the things he needs to do safely. Julie assists Desmond by cleaning and tidying his home and cooking, preparing meals for the week.
Des says Julie’s help allows him to continue to live a full life and focus on doing the things he loves to do.
“Living independently to me means being able to accomplish things on my own. It allows me to do a lot of things that normally I couldn’t do without their help, and the Home Care support makes a huge difference.”
Over the time they’ve been working together, Desmond and Julie have built a close relationship.
“Julie has been working with me for a long time and I’ve gotten to know her very well. She enjoys my quirky humor and she’s always happy to help.”
Des says Julie has become more than a practical help and they have developed a genuine a friendship.
“[The service] is so helpful, but I’ve gotten to know her as a really good friend as well. And that’s important for people who have physical disabilities or even mental disabilities to feel comfortable, it makes them a lot happier.”
Feeling at ease with Julie, Desmond shared that he wanted to attend his best friend’s wedding in Melbourne, but wasn’t sure how he would be able to given the logistical challenges.
At this request, Julie sprang into action, speaking to her manager and working out a way to get Des to the function and support him during.
The day of the wedding the pair got dressed up and drove out, and Desmond delivered his best man speech flawlessly.
Julie describes it as the best thing they’ve ever done together.
“We were able to get to that lovely occasion that Des was so much looking forward to. I was privileged to go to his friend’s place and celebrate the wedding with him.”
