Regis Burnside have recently kicked off a bike riding program, collaborating with Cycling Without Age to bring the joy of cycling back to residents who are not able to ride their own anymore.

Cycling Without Age is a not-for-profit charity that connects those no longer able to ride bikes for themselves with their community and the outdoors by giving them rides on trishaw e-bikes. The program is run by a volunteer community group, offering free rides for older Australians and people living with disabilities.

A trishaw is a three-wheeled, pedal-powered cycle, featuring a front seat for two passengers and a rear seat for the pilot. This means those sitting in the front seat can experience all the joys of bike riding, the wind in their hair, fresh air and the views of a trail, with minimal risk

The Home’s Lifestyle Coordinator, Teena, first came across Cycling Without Age while watching TV several years ago. An idea was planted in Teena’s mind, which came to fruition recently when Cycling Without Age expanded operations to South Australia.

The Home had their first ride in February, with volunteers taking resident passengers on a 30-minute ride. They cycled around Adelaide, through leafy parks and across River Torrens.

Coming back from the ride, Resident Bob exclaimed, “I loved it! When is the next trip? I want to come again!”

The ride also gave residents the opportunity to explore their city. During the tour, resident Brian said to David, the volunteer cyclist, “I’ve never seen this part of Adelaide!”

After returning home, residents quickly began spreading word of how enjoyable the ride was, with many more residents requesting to join the next time. Teena has now booked in a ride every month for residents to enjoy. This program is an excellent way for residents to enjoy getting out, exploring new areas of the city and experiencing the outdoors in a safe and engaging way.
