For Kerry, working in aged care isn’t just a job, it provides fulfilment and connection.
After 14 years in the aged care sector, including the past six years in home care, Kerry has found deep purpose in the work she does every day. Starting off in hospitality, Kerry knew something was missing.
“I wanted a sense of purpose in my work. Hospitality just wasn’t giving me the fulfilment I was looking for. I wanted to know that when I came to work, I was making a difference,” she said.
That difference became clear when she transitioned into aged care. As a Home Support Worker at Regis, Kerry supports older Australians to live independently in their own homes, something she finds both humbling and rewarding.
“Every day is different. I get to build real connections with my clients, help them maintain their independence, and support them with the tasks they need a hand with. It’s about giving them confidence to stay at home.”
One of those connections is with Beth, a client Kerry has supported for over four years. Their bond has grown into something truly special.
“It doesn’t feel like work when I visit Beth. We’ve formed a beautiful relationship, it’s like a mother-daughter or close friendship. We share stories, go shopping together and genuinely care about each other.”
Kerry’s time with Beth includes everything from household tasks like making the bed, folding laundry, and cleaning, to simple conversations and being a trusted presence in her life. For Kerry, home care is about much more than just cleaning.
“People often think home care is just about chores, but there’s so much more to it. We’re checking in on our clients’ wellbeing, their mental health and their safety. It’s a holistic role.”
As a single mum, Kerry also appreciates the flexibility that working in home care provides, allowing her to spend more time with her daughter.
“Regis has been incredibly supportive. They’ve allowed me to work around my daughter’s school hours and appointments. That flexibility means a lot.”
Reflecting on her journey, Kerry acknowledges that Beth has also had a real impact on her, describing her as a very special lady.
“Beth has been there for me during some hard times. It’s a two-way relationship, we support each other. It doesn’t feel like a job when you come to a client’s house that you have a really nice connection with,”
“I wouldn’t have it any other way.”
