Gracie has been an Assistant in Nursing (AIN) at Regis Lutwyche since January of this year, but her journey began during a student nursing placement in September 2024.  That experience sparked a passion for aged care she hadn’t anticipated.

Her day-to-day role is hands-on. From serving meals and morning tea to accompanying residents to bingo or Italian-speaking groups, her focus is on ensuring everyone feels cared for and connected. “It’s about making sure everybody feels like they have a purpose and someone to talk to.”

For Gracie, the most rewarding part of the job is building relationships. “When you come back and they remember you and they ask you about your life and you get to talk to them about their life, you can make those positive connections,” she says. Those bonds extend to the families too. “I think feeling proud is a lot to do with when family members tell you how much they’ve seen a difference in their mum or their dad when you’ve helped them.”

Working at Regis has reinforced the importance of teamwork for Gracie. “Everybody works as a really good team and everybody supports each other. We have someone to rely on always,” Gracie shares.

And Gracie’s advice for anyone considering aged care? “Do it. It’s the most rewarding thing I’ve ever done. It has also given me so many like fundamentals for nursing, the things I’ve learned (at uni) I’m putting them into practice every single day.”

Gracie’s story is a testament to the impact caring people in aged care can have. “You can make a difference in someone’s life just by showing up every morning and putting a smile on your face,” she says. For Gracie, that’s what makes every early morning, and every late night, truly worth it.
