Aged care is about more than providing clinical care. It’s about building relationships. 

For Sandeep, a registered nurse at Regis Torquay in Victoria, that’s what makes the role so rewarding. 

After beginning her nursing career in 2012, she found aged care offered something unique: the opportunity to care for the same people over time, getting to know their stories and becoming a trusted part of their lives. 

“In the hospital, patients recover and are discharged,” she said. “In aged care, they’re like family.” 

“When residents move here, it’s a big transition for them. It’s an opportunity for us to get to know them while we help them settle.” 

Over time, those relationships allow Sandeep to see the difference that care can make. She celebrates the small wins, notices changes others might miss and shares in the moments that matter most to residents and their families. 

Whether it’s helping a resident regain confidence, supporting them through a difficult period or simply seeing them enjoy their day, those moments are what make the role rewarding. 

“Residents share their experiences with us, and we learn so many things from them,” she said. 

Unlike a hospital environment where care is often focused on a single episode, aged care gives Sandeep the opportunity to walk alongside residents over years. She sees their progress, understands their journey and becomes part of the community around them. 

“If they need us, we are there,” she said. “And even when they are okay, we are still there.” 

 At Regis, nurses have the opportunity to build lasting relationships with residents and their families, providing care that extends beyond a single moment in time. For Sandeep, it is those connections that make aged care such a rewarding career.
