Since 2016, once a week at Regis Burnside, volunteer Helen Haines comes through the front door with a trolley full of props and a knowing smile. She is there to run a dance session for residents, and the energy in her classes is always electric. Helen’s positivity is simply infectious, once she starts singing and dancing, everyone can’t help but join in.
With a background in nursing and early childhood education, Helen was drawn to combining the physical benefits of dancing with the emotional ones. She says that when she implemented this technique with older people, the rewards were obvious.
“Music is a powerful stimulus for the brain, both emotionally and cognitively. It stimulates memory, this often leads into reminiscing and conversation,” Helen says.
She recalls a memorable moment from nearly 10 years of volunteering, during one of her sessions, a resident who could not speak English asked to join the group. The woman was unable to communicate with Helen, however, Helen soon learned that she had been a singer in the Beijing opera. Being a fellow lover of opera, Helen played this music at the next session. The resident responded immediately, joining Helen to dance along. Helen says the language of dance enabled them to communicate. “I asked her to teach me some of these beautiful movements and we both laughed at my somewhat clumsy attempt. I really felt connected to her at this moment and felt I had made a difference to her wellbeing.”
Helen’s dedication to the residents at Regis Burnside reflects the heart of Regis, creating supportive environments where older Australians can live life on their terms. She has recently been recognised as a finalist in the Regis Care Awards.
“I am fortunate to be able to share my love of music with residents each week and it is very heartwarming and rewarding to see smiling faces in anticipation of another fun music session. I have never considered being awarded for the work that I do but I am honoured to have been acknowledged and considered.”
