At Regis Holland Park, a resident led idea recently became a regular addition to the lifestyle calendar. The activity, called Show & Tell, was introduced after resident Greta suggested it as a way for residents to share personal items and stories with one another.
Greta was delighted to see her request included. She brought along keepsakes from her time as a Swimming Marshall, including medals, certificates, photos, a cricket bat and a 7ft wooden spoon covered in wishes and autographs. Greta is a proud Life Member of Swimming Queensland, recognised for her long and dedicated service. “I’m very thankful that our voices are heard,” she said with a smile.
Ian, another resident, displayed handmade models crafted from recycled cardboard. Since joining the Home, he has gifted team members with boats, houses and lighthouses. One of his boats, named Regis, is kept at the nurses’ station. Ian also shared a small toy dog named Trinket, which he has treasured since the age of five.
Elizabeth brought a blanket created by her family for her birthday. Each square featured a photo and memory from different stages of her life including childhood, motherhood, marriage and family milestones. One square even celebrated her skydive at age 70. Elizabeth and her daughter Karen shared the stories behind each image.
The session was well received, with residents enjoying the chance to learn more about each other. Gordon, who attended as part of the audience, said, “It’s so good to see people sharing their cherished memories and at the same time, it’s inspiring as well.”
Activities like this support connection and give residents a space to reflect, express themselves and build relationships through shared experiences.
