The Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP) provides entry-level support for older people who need some help to remain independent at home.
It typically involves receiving help with a particular task and services are provided individually.
CHSP suits people who need a smaller amount of support to stay independent. This could include help around the house, transport to medical appointments, basic personal care. It is also usually limited to a few hours or one or two days a week.
How is CHSP different to Support at Home?
Support at Home provides more comprehensive support for people with higher or more complex care needs.
Support at Home uses a single assessed, funded support plan covering multiple service types. The older person receiving care will have a budget to use across the different services, depending on their care needs and goals.
CHSP provides separate services, which can suit people who require a lower level, or short-term care.
How do I choose between CHSP and Support at Home?
As a general rule clients don’t get to choose. They are either assessed for CHSP or Support at Home. Both programs require an assessment through My Aged Care. This can help you to determine which is right for you, based off your eligibility and support needs.
You can contact My Aged Care by:
- Calling the My Aged Care contact centre on 1800 200 422.
- Using the My Aged Care website to find information and apply online.
- Speaking with an Aged Care Specialist Officer at a Services Australia centre.
