Leslie is a resident at Regis Sunraysia, and his life story is one of family, sport and dedication. Growing up in Mildura with 13 siblings meant life was always busy, but Leslie remembers it as peaceful. “We had a very peaceful family and us kids never fought. Mum kept a tight rein on us all. My dad was in the Army and was away a lot,” he recalls.

Sport played a big role in Leslie’s younger years, and football was his favourite. He played for Karween Karrawina near Werrimul in rural Victoria and continued playing as he moved for work. “I went to work in Hopetoun and played for Hopetoun Football Club. I even got picked to play for the Southern Mallee Team,” he says proudly.

Leslie spent 39 years working at Mildura Airport, and he loved every part of the job. “I would start work at 5am and if I got home by 8pm it was a good day,” he says. His role included runway checks and communicating with Melbourne via radio from his truck. “Everything about the job was my favourite memory,” Leslie shares.

Helping others has always been important to Leslie. He often assisted family and friends on their farms, a value instilled by his father before he went to war. “I’ve always helped out my family and friends all my life,” he says.

When asked what makes him happiest, Leslie says it’s simple: “I’ve always helped people who were in trouble. That makes me happy when I’m helpful.”

His advice for younger generations? “Work hard but also enjoy your life,” he says with a smile.

Leslie’s story is a wonderful example of resilience, community and kindness, qualities that continue to shine at Regis Sunraysia. Through our lifestyle programs, we encourage residents like Leslie to share their stories and passions, creating connections that matter.
