Grace’s life has been shaped by adventure, family and a willingness to embrace new beginnings. Born in Lancashire, England during the Second World War, Grace grew up with fond memories of her brother Robert and the family pets that filled their home with life. After leaving school, she began working in a ladieswear shop where she learnt the art of dressmaking, a skill that would stay with her throughout her life.

At just 17, Grace met Ron at a dance at The Ritz. Two years later, the couple married in 1956, beginning a partnership that has spanned decades. Their first child, Mark, arrived two years later, bringing what Grace describes as immense joy to their young family.

In the early 1960s, Grace and Ron made the life-changing decision to emigrate from England to Australia with Mark and their newborn daughter Julie. “It was a big decision leaving family and England, but I know it was a good decision,” says Grace. “It took about 5 weeks for the boat trip. It was crowded and parents and children were put in separate cabins, so this made the trip quite difficult.”

Over the years, Grace and Ron built a beautiful life together in the Geelong region. They shared a love of community and were active members of the Morris Minor Car Club, where they formed many lasting friendships. The couple also ran several milk bars around the area, enjoying the opportunity to work side by side and connect with the local community.

Family has always been at the heart of Grace’s life. She speaks proudly of helping raise her grandchildren, Lee, Josh, Rhiannon, Samuel, Georgia and Grace. “Our family is so important to us, our life has always revolved our kids and grandkids, and we still dote on them,” she shares.

Today, Grace and Ron call Regis Torquay home, where they have lived for more than four years. They spend their days enjoying each other’s company and staying involved in the community around them.

Grace enjoys taking part in activities at the home, particularly the exercise groups, and music continues to play an important role in her life. She is a fan of Elvis Presley and Neil Diamond and keeps a large music collection in her room, always looking forward to the visiting entertainers who bring familiar songs and happy memories.

Looking back, Grace reflects on a life shaped by movement and change, crossed with deep roots in family and community. From her early years in England to building a home and raising her family in Australia, each chapter has brought new experiences and lasting relationships. “At Regis Torquay, our happiness is achieved by always being together, and me helping look after Ron. We have good friends here and are always busy with activities and visitors,” says Grace.
