At Regis, all of our residential aged care homes offer a choir, bringing together people who are new to singing, those trying something new and experienced songbirds alike.
Three such skilled singers at Regis are residents Grace, Doreen and Carmelle.
Grace has been singing for most of her life. She’s sung in many different choirs, all the way from school choirs in childhood to singing across the world with the World Festival Choir as an adult.
She says, “I wanted to join the Regis choir because I love singing and it’s something I’m good at! I enjoyed attending the rehearsals and learning new songs.”
For Grace, the inter-home singing was a fantastic experience.
“Singing with choirs from other homes was so much fun because we got to go out on the bus, meet new people and of course do lots of singing! I tell all my friends and family about that afternoon. I can’t wait for the next one!” she exclaimed.
Fellow resident Doreen similarly grew up singing.
“Music has played a significant role in my life. When I was a child, I learned to play the piano and in my teenage years I developed a passion for singing. I loved being a part of a group and meeting interesting people.”
Doreen says the Regis choir gives her that same opportunity to connect with others.
“By joining the Regis choir, I met some lovely residents who I hadn’t talked to before and we enjoyed sharing stories together.”
For resident Carmelle, singing in her home’s choir brings back fond memories. She says, “I’ve been singing since a very young age. One of my earliest memories is of my mother playing the piano; I would sit on top of the piano and sing along with her.”
Growing up in Canada, Carmelle sang at school, her church and at university. Living at Regis, she’s been able to continue expressing her love for singing. She says, “I was so excited to join the Regis Choir. I think singing is so important because it gives you endorphins and it’s a great way to meet new people!”
