Recently, residents Lorraine and Darby from Regis Sandgate Musgrave in Brisbane marked 71 years of marriage, a lifetime built on patience and a shared sense of humour.
Their story began in Revesby, Sydney. Lorraine was just 15 when she met Darby through a mutual friend outside the local cinema. Each Friday, they would meet at a milk bar near the train station, and Darby would walk her home. “He was sweet and very kind,” Lorraine said.
They married on 30 March 1955, beginning a life together that would take them far beyond Sydney. During Darby’s army service, the couple moved to Singapore, where they lived for two and a half years. Lorraine remembers that time fondly. She loved the people and the food, and the experience became one of the many shared memories that remain with them today.
Over the years, their family has grown to include three children, seven grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren.
“We are proud and very happy with what we have now,” Lorraine said.
Family remains a central part of their lives, with regular visits something they both value deeply.
At Regis Sandgate Musgrave, Lorraine and Darby continue to share the simple routines of daily life together. They enjoy watching television, joining in sports activities, playing bingo and hoy, and attending concerts. When asked what they love most about each other, their answers reflect the balance that has carried them through the years. Lorraine describes Darby as considerate and Darby says Lorraine is always caring.
When asked about the secret behind 71 years of marriage, they both said it comes down to never giving up on each other and always keeping a sense of humour.
After 71 years together, it seems that shared laughter and persistence are exactly what has made their marriage last.
