Our Lutwyche Home recently hosted its inaugural Arts and Craft Show, Past and Present, celebrating the creative talents of residents across generations.
The exhibition featured an inspiring collection of paintings, porcelain pieces, quilting, needlework and woodwork, showcasing both long-held passions and artworks created over the past year in our art therapy classes. Resident Maria Gatto exhibited 11 oil paintings from earlier in her life. Reflecting on her work, Maria said, “When I look at my paintings I cannot believe I painted them. I hope everyone enjoys seeing them.”
Her artwork, including scenes from Italy such as the Colosseum and the Bridge of Sighs, sparked joy and pride among our Italian residents.
The day began with a presentation from our art therapist, Ali Gillett of Brave Arts, followed by a live canvas painting demonstration with residents and families. The afternoon brought a special community moment as Year 2 students from Wooloowin State School joined the event to present Postcards from Brisbane, a collaborative display included in the exhibition.
The school provided a thoughtful afternoon tea for residents, students, families and teachers, with more than 40 guests joining the celebration. Local Councillor Danita Parry also attended to support and engage with our creative community.
To close the event, residents and students came together around tables filled with watercolour paints, sharing stories, ideas and inspiration through art.
This meaningful day reflected the power of creativity to connect generations, honour memories and enrich lives.
