Regis Lutwyche marked International Friendship Day last week with a celebration of memory and connection. In the lead up to the day, residents created yellow rose decorations for the Home’s memory tree. Yellow roses, a symbol of friendship and joy, were chosen to reflect appreciation.

The Home features two memory trees in the café area, which light up and serve as a beautiful conversation starter for residents and visiting family and friends. These trees are decorated for each event, with residents contributing handmade decorations during art and craft sessions leading up to the day.

In the afternoon, the Lifestyle team hosted a friendship themed reminiscing group. Residents shared stories, took part in a quiz on famous friendship duos and listened to songs that celebrate friendship, including “With a Little Help from My Friends” by The Beatles and “That’s What Friends Are For” by Dionne Warwick.

Lifestyle Assistant Maria and Lifestyle Coordinator Helen also shared their own stories of lifelong friendships, sparking heartfelt conversations. “Friendship is such a big part of life here,” said Helen. “It’s amazing to see how these connections bring comfort and a sense of belonging to our residents.”

The day was filled with meaningful reflections. When asked what makes a good friend, resident Margaret shared, “Having a friend you can talk about anything with”. Another resident, Val, spoke about her lifelong friend who still visits regularly. “We’ve been friends since we were eighteen. We can talk about everything and have so many memories together”. These friendships offer a powerful connection to the past and a sense of continuity and joy in the present.

Friendship plays an important role in building community within the Home. It helps reduce isolation, lifts mood and brings a sense of purpose and motivation to daily life.
