Regis Port Macquarie has launched a new intergenerational program called Kids Biz in partnership with Smartlands Daycare Centre. Every Wednesday, nine children aged four to five visit the Home to spend time with residents.

From the very first visit, the energy was contagious. Residents, children and team members all shared in the excitement. There were smiles, giggles and plenty of conversation as everyone got to know each other.

The children introduced play dough to the group, which was a new experience for many residents. It quickly became a favourite activity, sparking creativity and helping ease nerves. Before long, both age groups were building shapes and sharing ideas.

The children bring craft materials, LEGO and storybooks to share with residents. These simple activities have become a bridge for connection, sparking conversations and shared creativity. Over time, the children have started arriving with drawings and handwritten notes, small gestures that are helping genuine friendships take shape.

Residents light up during these visits. Some join in the activities, while others simply watch with joy, smiling and laughing as the children play.

These weekly visits help residents feel connected and engaged. The presence of children brings energy and warmth into the Home, encouraging movement and emotional connection. For many residents, it’s a highlight of the week and a reminder of the joy that comes from shared moments. Resident Marlene stated “It was wonderful to spend time with the children today. It made many people happy. And I got to play with playdough. I will go again”.

The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. Kids Biz is already making a difference, bringing warmth, creativity and connection to the Home.

Initiatives like this demonstrate a commitment to compassion, connection and community. They influence how care is delivered and how relationships grow across generations.
