Regis Lutwyche has developed a vibrant intergenerational program in partnership with two nearby schools, Wooloowin State School and Kedron State High. These visits bring energy, creativity and connection into the Home, with students and residents sharing activities like bingo, arts and crafts, singing, dancing, reading and conversation.

Students from Kedron State High School recently visited on a Thursday afternoon as part of the program. The group helped run a jumbo bingo session, sitting with residents and joining in the fun. Teacher Kathleen and her students also brought along handmade knitted and crocheted blankets, which were given out as prizes during the game. The students visit at the end of each school term before the holidays and are always respectful and engaged. Residents enjoy their company and often cheer for them to win.

Resident Betty, who won a blanket, said, “I can’t believe I won such a beautiful prize.” Resident Val shared, “It was the best activity, and I loved spending time with the kids. They were so polite, and I am looking forward to seeing them again.”

The Home is also regularly visited by Wooloowin State School, whose students walk over after school with their teacher Liz and parent volunteers. Liz has planned a full year of activities, including arts and crafts, musical performances, singing and dancing. Students range from Year 1 to Year 6 and some of the older children have been visiting for several years, forming special bonds with residents. These visits are a highlight for many.

Resident Iris, a former teacher, said, “The school children are so respectful and patient and always teaching us new things that we would never think of trying.”

The Lifestyle team sees real value in these programs. Residents who don’t usually attend other group activities often join in, and the team has noticed improvements in mood, mental health and communication. The visits also spark memories, with residents sharing stories about their own school days and forming meaningful connections with the students.

Having both schools within walking distance, along with supportive and enthusiastic teachers, has made the program easy to maintain and grow. The team at Lutwyche recognises how fortunate they are to have these strong local partnerships.

These intergenerational visits continue to strengthen community ties and bring joy to everyone involved.
