Anyone walking past Regis Blackburn a few Thursdays ago would have heard the melodic sound of bagpipes and drums wafting up the driveway. This is because the residents, family members and employees recently had a visit from the Victoria Police Pipe Band. Over 100 onlookers turned up to watch the show. The band played many familiar tunes, but in the different and unexpected form of pipe instruments. Everyone in the audience was delighted with the energetic and lively display.

As they played, the musicians also gave a running commentary, explaining what they do and describing their unique instruments. They told residents about their important role performing at police graduations and at ceremonial events.

Residents left the electric performance grinning, reminiscing about memories the music brought back. The daughter of one of Regis Blackburn’s residents told employees how much her dad loved the show, having been in a brass band himself. He said it was the best thing he had seen since moving into aged care.

This was the Victoria Police Pipe Band’s first visit to the Home, but which such positive feedback, the team plans to make it an annual event.
