Stuart, a resident at Regis East Malvern in Victoria, loves art and has always been creative. Born in London, Stuart was 14 when he and his family moved to Australia. Here, he lived an active and creative life, always drawn to art and design.

His artistic journey began with sketching portraits, which led him to mosaics and eventually to sculpting. Stuart says his travels, particularly to America, serve as a great source of inspiration for his art.

Stuart says what he enjoys most about sculpting is the gradual process of creating a piece with his hands. Over the years he has produced many works, but two stand out as favourites; a portrait of the head of a Roman gentleman and a Charlie Chaplin sculpture that he gifted to his sister.

Moving into aged care hasn’t stopped Stuart from showcasing his art, with Regis East Malvern recently proud to exhibit his pieces for other residents, families and visitors to enjoy.

Stuart says he loved seeing people’s reactions and was pleased that residents and team members came to appreciate his work.

“I enjoyed the response and when people asked me more about my creations,” he shared.

Although health challenges sometimes make it difficult for Stuart to sculpt now, he continues to share his passion with others, running a session at the home to teach other residents about sculpting.

Stuart’s advice for anyone wanting to try is simple: “Just give it a go and expect it to take time. It’s a hands-on task.”

Stuart’s story is a wonderful example of creativity and perseverance. His artistic talent and willingness to share his skills bring inspiration to those around him at Regis East Malvern.
