In celebration of International Women’s Day, we are spotlighting remarkable women in the Regis community.

Colli Nestor first came to Regis Birkdale in March 2013 when her late husband Michael became a resident. What started as an effort to encourage Michael to engage more in activities evolved into a commitment to fostering connections with the Regis community. Colli, accompanied by her dog Digby, became a regular presence in the Home.

In her younger years, Colli worked in the Air Force as a Telephonist where she first met Michael. As Michael was in the Air Force, ANZAC and Remembrance Day were significant events for the family. Colli would offer to donate the wreath while their daughter prepared commemorative speeches.

“The best opportunity I’ve been given was to be part of the Air Force back in the 1950s. Aside from meeting the love of my life, I learned to become more open and compassionate in looking after other people. I was a Telephonist back then and I learnt how to be more efficient and effective in communicating with people,” Colli said.

After the passing of her husband, Colli chose to return to Regis Birkdale to continue volunteering. Mondays and Tuesdays are dedicated to creating precious memories with residents. Colli organises eagerly anticipated bingo sessions and also assists with seated exercise classes. Her visits are marked by personalised one-on-one interactions and often include sweet treats and chocolates.

“The Regis team has given me full support in every endeavour and showed me how to love, listen and care for everyone I meet each time I’m here,” Colli said.

Colli was recently recognised at the 2023 National Regis Care Awards, where she won the Volunteer of the Year Award.

Colli’s commitment to the community is not just about activities; it’s about understanding the residents’ feelings and empathising with their experiences. The employees and residents at Regis Birkdale express their gratitude for Colli’s contributions, acknowledging her as a truly exceptional volunteer.
