Meet Janet, a dedicated Personal Care Assistant (PCA) at Regis Blackburn, who has a passion for teaching Auslan and providing happiness, love, compassion, and kindness to the elderly. Janet began her journey with Regis in December 2014 and has been an invaluable member of the team ever since.

As a deaf person herself who can lip-read very well, Janet’s unique skills have been a tremendous asset to the aged care home. Regis Blackburn has a dedicated wing to provide care and services to deaf residents, and Janet’s ability to communicate using sign language, gestures, and facial expressions has made a significant difference in the lives of these residents.

“Being a PCA, my role varies on a day-to-day basis, but my priority is caring for the residents when they need me the most. It’s a very challenging role for me, but I have been loving every minute of it,” says Janet.

In her capacity, she performs a diverse range of duties that span from delivering essential care to interacting with the residents in meaningful conversation. She attentively listens to their anecdotes and life experiences, and extends to them the compassion and attention they require.

Janet grew up in India where she learned American and Indian sign language.

“It was a challenge for me to take up Auslan too. However, I learnt Auslan and can now communicate with my Auslan deaf and blind residents at Regis Blackburn,” says Janet.

Her dedication to improving the lives of the residents is evident in the way she interacts with them, making their daily lives easier and more comfortable.

“I have a wonderful team who work with me. We share responsibilities and help one another,” Janet shares.

She adds, “You need to be responsible in the role you play at the residence and always enjoy and love what you do.”

“Working with the elderly makes me aware that I need to give them happiness, love and kindness, since we are all human, whether we are young or old,” says Janet. Her love for her work is evident in the way she interacts with the residents and her dedication to improving their lives.

“I love working at Regis since I get a chance to help those who are like me,” she shares. Her story is a testament to the fact that with dedication and hard work, nothing is impossible. Janet’s interactions with the residents at Regis Blackburn show that communication goes beyond words.

Janet’s unique skills have made a monumental impact on the lives of the residents at Regis Blackburn. The dedicated Sensory Support Unit for residents and Janet’s ability to communicate with them has made a significant difference in their lives. Her love for her work is an inspiration for us all to find meaning in what we do and to make a positive impact on the lives of those around us.
