When did you join Regis?
I joined Regis in January 2017 and I’m the Club Services Manager at Regis Kingswood in Adelaide.
What attracted you to work in the aged care sector?
Having a background in Hospitality Management, I believe in giving the best service I can. The opportunity arose with Regis whereby I could use my skills to help our elderly residents feel as comfortable, safe, and cared for as they would be in their own home.
What does a typical day look like in your role?
No two days are the same! I generally assist our residents with the following:
- Assiting with mealtime service
- Arranging family get-togethers
- Booking appointments at the hair and beauty salon
- Liaising with the Clinical Team regarding family feedback
- Taking residents for walks to the shopping centre
- Liaising with the hospitals for new resident admissions
- Answering queries from families
- Preparing rooms for new admissions
What do you like about your role?
I love the variety in my role and the fact that I have the opportunity to work across many departments. My role is not only office based, I am also involved on the floor daily, working in the dining room service, helping coordinate Lifestyle activities, and spending time with our residents.
What do you like about working with the elderly?
I enjoy hearing about their lives, and believe it is so important never to lose sight of the fact that our residents have led amazing lives.
What advice can you give to those wanting a career in aged care?
It is a challenging yet rewarding career:
- You must have the ability to empathise with residents
- Be a patient individual
- Be a good listener – never assume – ask questions and listen to the resident
- Have great communication skills between colleagues and residents
What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
I love spending time with my family, going for long walks by the ocean, swimming, and camping.
What does home mean to you?
Being safe, happy, comfortable and with the people I love.
