When residents at Regis Sandgate Musgrave expressed interest in playing bocce, the lifestyle team was more than happy to organise. Initially trialling the game on the lawn outside the Home, the team found the ground was not even enough to ensure fair play. As a solution, an astroturf was set up on the Home’s lower deck, creating a professional playing environment.
With the turf set and the balls ready, the atmosphere during the first game with the new set up was electric. All resident players were fully focused for the competition, with Lifestyle Coordinator Jessica Gibbs saying the energy was reminiscent of a tournament.
For first time player and resident Lyn, it was an unexpected afternoon of fun. She shared, “this was my first time joining in the game and I was surprised at how much I enjoyed it. I will definitely join in again next time!”
For resident Leslie, the new sport is now an important part of his activities schedule at Regis Sandgate Musgrave. He said, “this will be a new game I will add to my favourite activities.”
Activities like these can be made accessible to all residents, regardless of experience or ability. Resident Margaret has always enjoyed playing bocce, and continuing this hobby in aged care allows her to stay connected to something she loves. She says, “I have always enjoyed bowls and bocce and I am happy I still have the skills for it.”
Initiatives like this reflect Regis’ commitment to creating meaningful experiences that support residents to stay active and connected whilst having fun.
