Residents from 17 Regis homes in Victoria flocked to the Dandenong Ranges yesterday for a ride on the state’s iconic Puffing Billy Railway.
Built in 1900, the Puffing Billy Railway has been a Victorian landmark since it was built in 1900. For many Regis residents, it’s the site of happy childhood memories; a day spent through rolling hills, legs hanging over the edge, loved ones by their side.
Residents Pat and Joyce, who live at Regis Rosebud, said it was a trip down memory lane.
“I’ve done it three times with this group now,” Pat said, “I’m very lucky.”
Joyce added that it was a day full of nostalgia. “I felt like I was back in my childhood,” she laughed.
After loading onto the carriage, the residents and employees onboard wound their way through fern-filled gullies and misty ridgelines. Despite the drizzly weather, being out amongst nature and chatting with friends proved a fantastic way to spend a Thursday.
Regis Regional General Manager Alan Bouchereau said the outing was about supporting residents to remain active and engaged in the community and with each other.
“Experiences like this remind us that curiosity and adventure don’t fade with age,” Alan said.
“Getting out into nature, sharing a day with others and enjoying something iconic like Puffing Billy is wonderful for residents’ wellbeing and social connection.”
