The Lifestyle team at Regis Greenmount is always looking for new ways to bring energy, connection and variety to the lives of their residents. Their latest idea was a visit from the Darlington Fire Brigade, and it turned out to be one of the most memorable afternoons yet. The visit started from a conversation between a Lifestyle team member and her father, a volunteer firefighter.

On the day, the brigade arrived with fire hoses, stories and plenty of enthusiasm. For many of the volunteers, it was their first time visiting an aged care home, but they quickly connected with residents through conversation and activities. Residents were invited to try out the hoses, ask questions and share their own memories, including a few who had once been volunteer firefighters themselves.

“It brought back memories of my days as a volunteer fireman,” said resident Chris Long. “It was great to chat to the current band of volunteers.”

The courtyard was filled with laughter and conversation, with residents and firies swapping stories and enjoying the chance to connect. The brigade has since invited the group to visit their fire shed, a trip the Lifestyle team plans to organise once the weather clears.

The visit was a great example of how the Lifestyle team brings meaningful experiences into the Home, creating opportunities for residents to reminisce, engage and feel part of the wider community. It also highlighted the strong local ties that make Regis Greenmount such a connected and welcoming place. By inviting her father and his fellow volunteers into the Home, one team member was able to share a personal part of her life with residents, helping create a moment that was both personal and shared.
